Swine flu prevention
In the event of a swine flu pandemic careful thought should be given to
adopting suitable Infection Control Procedures. Depending on the deadliness
of the virus, the swine flu prevention measures you take could make the
difference between life and death. Protecting your eyes, nose, mouth and
hands from virus particles will be a major priority as these are the most
common passageways for a flu virus to transfer into the body.
Swine flu virus particles may also be transferred via clothing and especially
via shoes and so potentially contaminated footwear should not be brought
into your 'safe zone'. If you have worn protective clothing this should
disinfected or be disposed of with care as controlled waste. Any unprotected
clothing or footwear should be disinfected. A final step should always be
to sanitize your hands to further reduce the chances of cross-contamination.
The Center for Disease control (http://www.cdc.gov/)
suggests the following approach for swine flu prevention:
- Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing
or sneezing of infected people.
- Take everyday actions to stay healthy.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw
the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough
or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work
or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
- Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds
and other social distancing measures.
- Find healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety.
